Beijing’s universities welcome students back to campus under COVID-19 measures

As the new school year begins, college and university students are returning to campuses in Beijing under strict COVID-19 prevention and control measures. Universities with proper precautions are permitted to reopen gradually from Aug. 15 in Beijing, according to the municipal education commission.

Since mid-August, over 170,000 college and university students have returned to their campuses in Beijing, with around 10,000 returning to the city every day. By Monday, over 50 colleges and universities in Beijing, more than half the city’s total, had opened for the new semester, the commission said.

Peking University (PKU) welcomed over 3,300 freshmen on Tuesday. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, parents were not allowed to enter the campus, and over 100 volunteers assisted with reception. The university has implemented a variety of COVID-19 prevention and control measures. Students are required to take nucleic acid tests before returning to campus and must present a certificate concerning their health conditions and their pre-arrival whereabouts when registering.

PKU has also applied strict management measures in public areas within the campus, such as banning mass gatherings, staggering meal shifts, installing body temperature detectors at entrances and conducting regular disinfection, said Zhang Yong, deputy director of the general affairs department at PKU. In the new semester, colleges and universities will be placed under relatively closed management. For example, students who need to leave campuses will have to register in the school system before departing.

The number of college and university students returning to Beijing will hit 50,000 on Sept. 6, the highest single-day total yet, and the rush will continue until early October. In preparation for the resumption of on-campus activities, colleges and universities in Beijing have arranged rehearsals for the beginning of the new term and made contingency plans.

Wu Zhuangfei, a doctoral candidate starting his second year at Beihang University, had his identity and body temperature checked several times before checking in to his dorm. ‘After the COVID-19 outbreak, I continued with my research at home. I’m now very excited that I can return to school and resume my work in the laboratory,’ said Wu.

Since Aug. 24, Beihang University has welcomed roughly 12,000 students like Wu across staggered dates.
